Zero CO2 emissions from electricity production in Europe from 2050. That is the goal of European electricity producers according to a declaration signed by 61 top managers, representing 70 per cent of Europe’s total electricity production.
The declaration was published last Wednesday by Eurelectric, the umbrella organisation for the European electricity companies.
The document was handed to Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, EU Commission, by Lars G. Josefsson, Vattenfall, Chairman of Eurelectric.
The signatories include all the major Nordic electricity producers, including DONG Energy. In all, the document represents electricity producers from 27 countries.
Electricity producers anticipate investments of EUR 1800 bn up to 2030. One condition for achieving the target is that permanent rules are created, so that investors know what they are getting into. The document stresses the importance of energy efficiency measures for achieving climate goals.
